PARKSVILLE — Crews are beginning construction on a new pathway to run adjacent to Hwy. 19A in Parksville.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 16 and scheduled to be completed by early November, a 190 metre pathway will be installed for improved safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists alongside what’s commonly referred to as the Old Island Hwy.

Construction will result in some traffic pattern changes in the area.

“The existing northbound on ramp from Resort Dr. will permanently close and a new right-turn lane at Resort Dr. will be added to maintain Highway 19A northbound access,” a statement from the province read.

New signage directing travellers to Rathtrevor Provincial Park, as well as businesses in the area, will also be installed.

Work will take place Monday’s to Saturday’s from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with single lane alternating traffic operating between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“Drivers may experience delays as long as 10 minutes,” warned the province.

Traffic control personnel will be on site directing vehicles through the area.

Some detours will be in place for those accessing Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park over the next three weeks, until the new route can be established.
