NANAIMO — Crews from multiple fire departments responded to a forest fire on the Nanaimo River on the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 9.

The fire is south of Blind Lake on the north side of the river in the area of Heather Way burning in brush between several properties and the river.

The BC Wildfire Service measures it around 0.6 hectares in size, however crews on scene say some flanks of the fire are being held.

Local volunteer fire departments were dispatched to the scene, as were ground crews and a helicopter from the Coastal Fire Centre.

Crews from Extension and Cranberry volunteer fire departments were dispatched, along with Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

The fire was audibly cracking in brush just south of Nanaimo River Rd. Friday afternoon, with multiple crews running hose lines in an effort to stop its spread towards homes and property.

Area swimmers were removed from the surrounding area.
