Fast start by Chiefs sinks Clippers in 5-2 loss at Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — The Clippers got into an early hole against Chilliwack that was just too big to crawl out of.

In a 5-2 road loss the Chiefs Jack Sparkes, Caleb Elfering and Matt Argentina scored goals in the first seven minutes of the game.

The first period ended 3-0 and Chilliwack added a fourth goal before the second intermission off the stick of Brady Milburn.

Nanaimo’s Gabriel Westling got the Clippers on the board early in the third period only to have Parker Murry put the Chiefs up 5-1 with a deflection tally four minutes later.

Luke Buss rounded out the scoring by scoring a goal in his fourth consecutive game for Nanaimo.

Vladimir Nikitin outduelled Tyler Hodges for the win in net with the shots finishing 38-30 in Chilliwack’s favour.

The Clippers were 0/3 on the man advantage and 1/1 killing penalties.

In the season series Nanaimo is 0-3 against the Chiefs with one head to head game remaining, the regular season finale March 30 at Frank Crane Arena.

At the end of play on March 15 the Clippers were in fourth place in the Coastal Division, two points behind third place Alberni Valley and two points ahead of fifth place Victoria.

Nanaimo visits the Vernon Vipers on March 16 at Vernon’s practice facility.

Vernon’s usual facility Kal Tire Place is unavailable due to an issue with the buildings ice chiller.
