Port Pub renovation ordered

Jan 23, 2024 | 9:13 AM

Port Pub owner Peter Wang has been given 30 days to restore his building to a liveable condition.
City Council voted unanimously yesterday to declare the building a nuisance property, and force its clean-up.
In staff’s report, photos showed the hazardous and dilapidated condition of the building along with 2 pages of remedial demands to repair doors, windows, fire escapes, and ceilings in several units that have collapsed.
Mayor Sharie Minions says none of the residents in the 34-unit no-barrier apartment building should be displaced.
“We recognize the value of low and no-barrier housing for people who need it in the community however, those people still require safety standards to be met,” she said. “We can’t let landlords own properties and not maintain them to a point of the building being unsafe for people to be in so our staff including the fire department have deemed this building is needing this remedial action with full support by council.”
Minions said the Manager of Community Safety and Social Development will work with social service agencies to help tenants get safe, affordable housing if any residents are forced out.
