Clippers open season with 6-3 victory over Capitals

NANAIMO — The Clippers won their fourth straight season opener by beating Cowichan Valley 6-3.

The Capitals were up 2-0 six minutes into the game on markers by Luke Lavery and Matteo Lamoureux.

Joel Plante cut into the lead with the first tally of the Clippers season but Darrius Bachler gave the visiting Caps a 3-1 lead before the end of the first period.

From then on Nanaimo took over the game.

Gus El-Tahhan closed the gap to 3-2 and Michaeo Murtagh scored on a second period five on three man advantage to kot the score heading to the intermission.

Cole Lonsdale gave the Clippers their first lead just 12 seconds into the final frame before Andrew Brown added some insurance and Plante sealed the win with an empty netter.

Murtagh was named the game’s first star with a goal and an assist, new captain Brett Merner was the second star with a pair of assists and Joel Plante’s two goals earned him third star honours.

Nanaimo outshot Cowichan 34-24 with the Clippers going 1/6 on the power play and 3/3 killing penalties.

The two clubs have a rematch Saturday Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Cowichan Valley Community Centre.
