Charges applied against accused Cedar burglar captured by neighbours, multiple other offences alleged

NANAIMO — A man with multiple recent arrests and releases over the past year is facing a series of new charges, including for his alleged role in a pair of high-profile failed residential break-ins in Cedar early this year.

Tyrone Philip Reno Poulsen, 34, is charged with break and enter with intent to commit an offence, assault and possession of stolen property in relation to incidents in Cedar on Jan. 25.

Police allege Poulsen broke into a Yellow Point Rd. home in the afternoon but was attacked by the homeowner who hit him over the head with a blunt object, resulting in significant blood loss to the suspect.

Poulsen is then accused of trying his luck a few hours later at another house roughly two kilometres away, before being detained by neighbours, who used garden tools to contain a suspect until police arrived.

“Great job on the neighbours part to detain this individual without going hands on, allowing our members to take him into custody,” Nanaimo RCMP Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW at the time.

Poulsen allegedly committed several other crimes since the Cedar allegations against him.

Charges against Poulsen for dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer and mischief are linked to incidents on July 7 in Nanaimo.

Just a few weeks later on July 23, court records show Poulsen was arrested and later charged with resisting arrest and is accused of disobeying his release conditions applied by police.

Poulsen was already wanted in relation to two sets of crimes for alleged offences in the Cowichan Valley last summer, court records show.

He was charged with resisting arrest and driving while prohibited following an alleged incident on July 31, 2022 in Lake Cowichan. He was also charged with break and enter to commit an indictable offence, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of probation related to an alleged incident on Aug. 25, also in Lake Cowichan.

Poulsen is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Duncan for a pair of separate trials in the months ahead for both sets of charges in Lake Cowichan.

He failed to show up to a pair of court appearance linked to the offences, resulting in arrest warrants, including a Nov. 22 warrant. Poulsen was then re-arrested by police, only to be released during a Nov. 29 bail hearing for both matters, court records showed.

Arrest warrants were issued again, however Poulsen didn’t show up to a pair of follow-up court appearances in December and January, triggering additional warrants.

Poulsen’s criminal record dates back to 2011, resulting in numerous convictions and jail terms primarily for property crimes on Vancouver Island, including offences in Nanaimo.
