Highway paving ongoing throughout central Vancouver Island

NANAIMO — Road work crews are busy repaving the area’s highways ahead of the summer travel season.

Major projects are centred around Nanaimo, including a 50-kilometre stretch of Hwy. 19 between the Cedar Rd. exchange and Superior Rd. in Lantzville.

“ARC Asphalt Recycling Inc. has been awarded a $3.3-million contract for the project,” a release from the provincial government reads. “Work began in early May 2023 and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2023.”

Odour from the work site has been reported through different portions of Nanaimo with little precipitation or wind in the region over recent days.

A second project on Hwy. 19 extends north from Superior Rd. to Craigs Crossing.

Travellers can expect delays through work sites as they progress through the coming weeks and months.

Flaggers will be on site ensuring vehicles reduce speed and follow signage.

Overall, 157 kilometres of re-paving is set to occur this summer with projects ranging from Victoria to Campbell River.

“In 2023, the Province will invest approximately $30 million to upgrade Vancouver Island highways to make driving smoother, more efficient and safer for all people travelling in the region,” the province added.
