Canadian defender/midfielder Kwame Awuah signs with D.C. United affiliate club

LEESBURG, Va. — Canadian Kwame Awuah has signed with Loudoun United FC, the USL Championship affiliate of D.C. United.

The 27-year-old from Toronto, originally drafted 16th overall by New York City FC in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. spent last season with St. Louis City 2 in the MLS Next Pro league.

“Kwame is a proven winner at every club he has been at,” Loudoun head coach Ryan Martin said in a statement. “He is dangerous going forward so he can play central midfield or left back with his quality. With his experience playing in multiple leagues including the CONCACAF Champions League, he will be a huge asset to our young squad.”

Awuah spent two seasons with NYCFC, appearing in 10 matches, before signing for Forge FC. Awuah helped Forge to Canadian Premier League championships in 2019 and 2020, recording three goals and 10 assists in more than 80 appearances for the Hamilton side.
