QUALICUM BEACH — A local man died following a two-vehicle crash on the Island Highway last Friday evening.

According to Oceanside RCMP, an initial investigation determined the driver of a Mazda sedan heading north drifted over the centre line and collided with a southbound Pontiac Grand-Am around 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.

The driver of the Mazda, a 31-year-old Bowser man and the car’s lone occupant, died on scene.

The other car’s driver, who was also the lone occupant, was not hurt. The crash occurred near Baywatcher Rd. in Qualicum Bay, leading to traffic disruptions.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth stated in a news release the definitive reason why the Mazda shifted to the oncoming lane has not been determined.

“The investigation is ongoing in conjunction with an RCMP collision re-constructionist and the BC Coroners Service,” Worth stated.

Anybody who witnessed the collision and haven’t yet spoken to Oceanside RCMP are asked to contact their detachment’s non-emergency line at 250-248-6111 and quote file number 2022-11608.
