NANAIMO — A woman was hospitalized with serious, non life-threatening injuries after the 25-year-old was hit by an SUV on the weekend on Terminal Ave North.

It happened on Sunday, Oct. 9 at about 8:30 p.m. where Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the driver of a northbound newer model Nissan Rogue hit the victim at the crosswalk near Burger King.

“Based on evidence obtained from witnesses and some dash cam video it appears that the victim and her friend were legally crossing through the marked crosswalk when struck by the northbound vehicle.”

The victim was taken to hospital, while O’Brien said the driver, a woman in her late 20’s, remained on scene and cooperated with police.

“Alcohol can be ruled out, distracted driving cannot be,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The police investigation continues with no charge recommendations determined at this point.

RCMP crash analysts attended the scene, while the stretch of road was closed for several hours.

“The vehicle involved was impounded and will undergo mechanical inspection. We don’t need any further evidence from individuals, we have some solid dash cam video which clearly shows the incident.”

Orange painted evidence markings are located near the collision scene.

In addition to Nanaimo RCMP, personnel with Nanaimo Fire Rescue and the BC Ambulance Service also attended the incident.
