Nanaimo candidates to meet and greet with voters ahead of upcoming municipal election

NANAIMO — An informal Meet the Candidates Night established by the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce aims to help voters learn more about who our next governors will be.

The Nanaimo Chamber is hosting the Thursday, Sept. 22 event at the Beban Park Social Centre starting at 6:30 p.m.

The event is expected to wrap up at about 9:00 p.m.

Candidates vying for a position on Nanaimo City Council and a school board trustee position with Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools were invited.

Chamber president Kim Smythe told NanaimoNewsNOW 35 candidates registered to attend.

He noted booths will be set up where candidates can interact with what he anticipates will be a large crowd of attendees.

Smythe stated with so many candidates running locally in elections it was felt a debate-type event wouldn’t serve the public’s interest.

A loaded list of 29 candidates are hoping to secure one of eight City Council seats, while four contestants are after the mayor’s job.

Twelve candidates are running for a school board trustee position.

Municipal elections take place province-wide on Saturday, Oct. 15, while advance voting opportunities in Nanaimo happen on Oct. 5 and Oct. 12.
