Nanaimo RCMP bike patrol nabs day-drinking prolific offender during routine stop

NANAIMO — Keen-eyed officers on bike patrol have nabbed a prolific offender.

Officers working in the detachment’s bike patrol unit were moving through downtown Nanaimo just before lunch on Thursday, Aug. 25 when they noticed a man drinking in public.

While not a significant issue on its own, it led officers to inquire who the man was.

“He tried to produce a false name to the officers who weren’t buying it. This only piqued their interest further,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a statement.

A search of the man turned up real identification, which then led to officers discovering he was well known to police in the Lower Mainland.

He was wanted on seven warrants from the Vancouver area where he’s to face charges for assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer and uttering threats.

A car was called and he was taken back to the Nanaimo detachment.

The 34-year-old of no fixed address, who’s name isn’t being released by police, remains in police custody in Nanaimo ahead of transport back to Vancouver.

O’Brien added routine stops like this can sometimes go beyond just the initial, minor infraction which got the officer’s attention.

“Consuming alcohol in public is in itself not a major offence but it certainly provides grounds for police to find out who the person is and ascertain if they are wanted or breaching any current conditions.”
