Timbermen to face Adanacs in opening round of WLA playoffs

Aug 5, 2022 | 12:22 PM

NANAIMO — For the first time in league history the Western Lacrosse Association standings finished in a four way tie for first place.

The Nanaimo Timbermen, Victoria Shamrocks, Langley Thunder and Coquitlam Adanacs all ended the regular season with identical 12-6 records. League tiebreakers see the Timbermen finish third, resulting in a best of seven WLA semi final in Coquitlam beginning Saturday, Aug. 6.

Timbermen head coach Tewanee Joseph is looking forward to the matchup.

“Every team in the league is good and I think to play the creator’s game again after coming through COVID was a major positive for everyone. We’ve all played each other and we’ve all beaten each other.”

Coquitlam won two of the three games against Nanaimo in the season series with the home team taking all the victories.

The Adanacs won 9-5 in late May, Nanaimo took a 6-4 decision in June and the A’s won the last meeting 11-8 in July.

Joseph said WLA wins and save percentage leader Christian Del Bianco will be a key figure for the opposition in the upcoming series.

“You have to be aware that Del Bianco is a top notch goalie, and for us playing as a team will be very important. We have to move the ball. We’re a fast paced lacrosse team, that’s our identity. “

Nanaimo will host games two, four and if necessary six in the series on Monday, Aug. 8, Friday Aug. 12 and Monday, Aug. 15.

Joseph knows the Tmen will need to find ways to have success on the road to advance to the final.

“The most important thing is to concentrate on the things we do well. Whatever floor that we’re on we stick to our framework and support each other.”

When the team is at Frank Crane Arena, Joseph is calling on drummers from Snuneymuxw, Nanaimo and other parts of Vancouver Island to support the team.

A growing contingent of drummers in the stands helped Nanaimo to a 7-2 home record including six straight wins.

“We’ve had the drummers coming out and the community coming out. It’s been exciting for the guys and myself. We’re really feeling the energy that comes from the drums and the connection to the rhythm.”
