Nanaimo Clippers set for BCHL championship showdown against Penticton Vees

May 6, 2022 | 8:46 AM

NANAIMO — It’s a battle of two teams on 12 game win streaks.

The 12-0 Nanaimo Clippers will take on the 12-1 Penticton Vees for the BCHL’s Fred Page Cup, beginning Friday, May 13 at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Game two, also in Penticton, will go Saturday, May 14 before the series shifts to Nanaimo’s Frank Crane Arena on Tuesday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 18

If necessary, game five would be in Penticton Friday, May 20, game six in Nanaimo on Sunday, May 22 and game seven back in the Interior on Tuesday, May 24.

The red-hot Nanaimo Clippers are yet to lose a game this postseason and are 22-4-2 since a potentially season derailing coaching adjustment saw head coach Darren Naylor suspended and associate coach Colin Birkas take the reigns.

Nanaimo cruised past Surrey in four games before getting past Chilliwack in the second round in four tight contests.

Back-to-back shutouts in Nanaimo against the Langley Rivermen helped set the tone for the Clippers to win the Coastal Conference Championship in four straight.

After a speed bump in game one of the first round against Trail on March 31, the Vees have also rattled off 12 straight wins after dispatching the Smoke Eaters in five games before sweeping Prince George and West Kelowna in four.

The lone game between the two teams saw the Vees win 7-3 at Frank Crane Arena in early November.

The finals series will be the seventh between Nanaimo and Penticton.

Nanaimo won three straight over the Vees in the 1970’s, however the three most recent series have all gone Penticton’s way including the latest matchup in 2015.
