Lundman Oman-bound after record breaking walk as season ramps up for Nanaimo Track and Field athletes

NANAIMO — Local track and field athletes are posting strong results in 2022 and being recognized for outstanding achievements last year.

At the top of the list is Olivia Lundman who set a Canadian record in the 10,000 metre race walk in early February.

Lundman, who is currently a student at UBC, broke a 35-year-old U20 standard and has qualified for the 2022 race walk World Championship.

“I went into the qualifying race with big dreams of representing Canada in Oman at Worlds,” Lundman told NanaimoNewsNOW. “”It is a huge honour to represent Canada and I am very excited and grateful.”

The 19-year-old set the Canadian record in her first official attempt at the 10,000 metre distance.

She will compete in Oman in early March.

Another four Nanaimo athletes Niall O’Hara, Lucy Russell, Sonya Urbanowicz, and Ethan Katzberg were awarded the title of Athlete of the Year in different categories by BC Athletics.

In 2021 O’Hara, qualified as a finalist for the U16 Male Cross Country Runner of the Year Award.

NDSS student Russell received the award for U16 Female Track and Field Award in the 14 year old division.

After setting a U18 BC record in pole vault Urbanowicz named the U18 Track and Field Athlete of the Year winner.

Thompson Rivers University student Katzberg was recognized with the award for U20 Track and Field Athlete of the Year after he set new Canadian records the hammer throw and the weight throw.

Spring training for Nanaimo Track and Field Club athletes for the 2022 season is set to begin on Mar 1.
