Fifth homicide investigation in 2021 opened by Nanaimo RCMP

NANAIMO — For the fifth time in 2021, local Mounties are investigating a homicide in the city.

Nanaimo RCMP were asked by officers in Kelowna to conduct a welfare check on a man in the area after their concern grew about his wellbeing.

On Thursday, Aug 12 officers discovered the body of 30-year-old Ryan Mosher, with the detachment’s Serious Crime Unit called out to investigate. Mosher had only recently moved to Nanaimo from the Interior.

“We strongly believe Mr. Mosher’s death is an isolated incident and the general public is not considered to be at risk,” Cst. Derek Balderston said in a release. “Investigators have spoken to numerous people both from Kelowna and Nanaimo to assist in establishing what may have occurred.”

Nanaimo Mounties didn’t disclose where Mosher’s body had been discovered.

Police are asking the public to call the Serious Crime Unit at 250 754 2345 if the have any information related to Mosher during his brief time in Nanaimo.

It’s the fifth homicide investigation officially opened by Nanaimo RCMP in 2021.

The body of Randel Charles Thomas was discovered along the Nanaimo Parkway in late March, with police originally saying it was a suspicious death before later upgrading to a homicide investigation.

On May 20, a man linked to gang violence in the Lower Mainland was shot and killed behind the Wendy’s on the Island Hwy. near Rock City Rd. The targeted shooting draw an expansive police response with three people later arrested in a north Nanaimo hotel.

In late May, police also conducted a multi-day search of Diver Lake and an apartment on Rosehill St. in relation to Sidney Mantee, who had been reported missing in the last year.

RCMP said at the time foul play was suspected in the death of Mantee and upgraded their investigation in mid-June to a homicide.

On June 16, RCMP said they considered the death of Amy Watts near Victoria Cres. earlier in the month a homicide.
