NANAIMO — A further seven new COVID-19 cases were confirmed by Island Health on Friday.

The additions are in line with a bump in daily cases reported from the health authority, with eight each of the previous two days.

Island Health reported 56 cases currently active including 11 in the central Island region. To date, there have been 5,134 total cases throughout the entire pandemic.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The data discrepancy has increased in recent weeks, with the province reporting no new cases for Island Health on Friday, while counting 73 active cases.

Across B.C., a joint statement from the province and public health announced 109 new cases.

Active cases dropped to 1,389 with 128 people in hospital across B.C. and 48 in intensive care.

One death linked to COVID-19 was reported by the province.

The upcoming weekend is the first since the province relaxed restrictions around non-essential travel, leading to a surge in demand for BC Ferries reservations.

It crashed the company’s website on Monday, June 14 and again on Friday.

In response to the surge in visitors, BC Ferries added a handful of sailings to the Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay crossing.
