‘It’s a priority file:’ Nanaimo Mounties probe assault of jogger

NANAIMO — Exhausting all internal avenues, Nanaimo RCMP hope the public can help solve a disturbing crime last month involving a young jogger victimized east of the city’s downtown.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said on June Tuesday, June 9, at 4:20 p.m., a 21-year-old woman jogging on Second St. approaching Pine St. when an unknown man riding a bicycle approach from behind and slap her buttocks.

“The person then took off, she gave quite a description, she called it in immediately to us,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The suspect is described as:

  • Caucasian male.
  • About 35-years-old, standing 6’3″ with a slim build.
  • Short brown hair and scruffy beard.
  • Wearing a black hoodie and tight black/grey pants and a black oval-shaped backpack.
  • Riding an older model mountain bike, possibly red in colour.

O’Brien said police did a detailed search of the area, including neighbourhood door-knocking.

Asked why police held off on promptly releasing the report, Cst. O’Brien said their officers are obligated to follow up on every tip, which can bog down investigations.

He said their members’ work to date included cross-referencing other similar incidents, turning up no fresh leads.

“We’re not getting anything at this point, this is why he say ‘Okay, let’s stop for a second, send it out to the public and see if they can move this forward.'”

In this case, O’Brien said there was no interaction between the victim and assailant besides the assault itself, describing it as a “one-off” incident.

He said these kinds of crimes are serious and are pursued vigorously.

“It’s a priority file, this is a young person out getting some activity, and this person decides to do something stupid like this. We want to find out who this person is.”

O’Brien credited the victim’s quick report to police and detailed suspect description.

“Based on that, I think we will probably be able to develop some leads from the public,” O’Brien concluded.
