Police investigate ‘devastating’ Nanaimo Judo Club fire

Jul 14, 2026 | 3:06 PM

NANAIMO — With a cause listed as undetermined, Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a suspicious fire at a local judo club’s hall.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said the fire was reported on Saturday, July 11 just before 5 a.m. at Sid Clark Gyro Park, where flames originating from the stairwell sent embers into the building’s attic.

“Crews knocked it down, they contained it to the building, but extensive smoke and water damage inside the building itself; they determined that nobody was inside.”

The badly damaged building on Machleary at Campbell streets is uninhabitable.

“It’s quite devastating,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said a witness saw the flames, but didn’t see anybody leaving the area.

Cst. O’Brien hopes area witnesses or potentially private surveillance footage from those living in the area can help advance their investigation.

“Maybe they saw somebody linger in the area, maybe they saw a vehicle leave at a high rate of speed, we don’t know, but the club has been shut down indefinitely.”

A GoFundMe page has been launched to assist the non-profit organization.

The fundraiser stated the Nanaimo Judo Club is working with the City to find a temporary space.
