NANAIMO — B.C. continues to march down the hill of the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave as it heads into the unofficial start of summer.

A statement from the province reported 420 new cases across the province on Friday, May 21 which falls in line with increasingly lower daily updates.

Island Health reported nine new cases on Friday, including four in the central Island region. Active cases for the health authority dropped from 121 to 112 with 46 on central Vancouver Island.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Provincially, active cases dropped to 4,507 including 319 people in hospital, with 107 of those patients receiving intensive care.

The number of active cases, hospitalizations and those in critical care all dropped in the last 24 hours.

A further six people passed away as a result of COVID-19, with now 1,667 people losing their lives as a result of the virus.

Public health clinics continue to administer vaccine at rapid rates, with 56,660 doses administered in the last 24 hours, pushing B.C.’s tally past 2.74 million.

All but 142,406 are first doses.

The current slate of restrictions surrounding inter-health region travel, indoor dining and family gatherings remain through the long weekend.

“On Tuesday, the details of the Restart Plan will be shared with everyone. At that point, you’ll be able to start to plan for what that means for you, your family and your business. There are no changes for individuals or businesses until that time.

The province said a gradual approach to the restart will be taken to ensure cases don’t spike into a fourth wave.
