NANAIMO — For the second consecutive year, the Fred Page Cup will stay in the trophy cabinet.

The BC Hockey League announced on Tuesday, April 27, the on-going pod season would not be followed by any playoff structure.

It means the Nanaimo Clippers will wrap their season, along with the rest of the BCHL on May 11.

“We are thrilled that we were able to reward our players for all of the hard work they put in during what was a difficult and challenging season,” Steve Cocker, BCHL executive director said in a statement. “We look forward to returning to a more normal schedule next year and once again crowning a BCHL champion.”

The league cited on-going restrictions related to COVID-19, making it “not feasible” to conduct a postseason.

In order to play a modified season, the BCHL had an 11th hour pitch accepted by the public health office to play in five pod locations around the province, each featuring three or four teams.

Nanaimo has played in a pod based out of Port Alberni against the Bulldogs, Victoria Grizzlies and Cowichan Valley Capitals, although all the out of town teams travel to and from the games out of their home communities.

The league’s traditional end of season awards will also stay locked away.

League-wide honours for top scorer, MVP, top defenceman and others will be replaced this season by pod-specific awards.
