NANAIMO — Several bystanders were instrumental in helping local RCMP wrap a chaotic scene in the city’s Harewood neighbourhood.

Nanaimo RCMP responded to reports of an assault with a weapon around 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 14 near the intersection of Bruce Ave. and Seventh St.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said when police arrived, they didn’t have to look far for the suspect who had attempted to leave on his motorcycle.

“There were several people who appeared to be holding a male down and several firearms were seen on the ground as well. The firearms were secured, this male was taken into custody.”

Police seized a loaded .22 calibre rifle along with an unloaded handgun and several knives.

Nanaimo RCMP believe an argument occurred at a nearby residence and the firearms were used to hit a 50-year-old individual who suffered lacerations and was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 39-year-old man faces charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and numerous firearm related charges. He appeared in court on Monday, March 15.

A woman at the scene was also arrested but later released without charges at this time.

O’Brien said the bystanders who held the man until police arrived were invaluable in assisting with the investigation.

“We never ask the public and there’s no expectation for the public to get involved in situations like this. Having said that, they made a decision, they went in and went hands on with this person and quite effectively dealt with the situation.”

Officers were on scene Monday as the investigation continues.
