Remains found of missing woman after Ladysmith boat fire

LADYSMITH — Police have located the body of a missing woman after a weekend boat fire off the shores of Ladysmith.

Emergency crews descended to the Ladysmith waterfront in the early morning hours of Saturday Feb. 27 to find a large boat drifting in the water fully engulfed in flames.

A man who was on board the 50-foot vessel was rescued by an onlooker in a small boat. A woman in her 60’s did not make it off.

“The investigators have determined that this was a tragic incident, and there is no indication of any criminality,” Cpl. Chris Manseau said in a release.

The BC Coast Guard assisted rescue efforts and may recover debris from the scene, according to the RCMP.

Local police credited onlookers for helping the situation from becoming worst.

“The Ladysmith RCMP want to thank the quick actions of those nearby witnesses who rescued the man from the boat as it was engulfed in flames, Staff Sgt. Steve Perret, active commander for Ladysmith RCMP, said. “Their quick actions likely saved this person’s life.”

The BC Coroners Service and the Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
