Preliminary inquiry scheduled for man accused murdering Nanaimo teen

NANAIMO — A preliminary inquiry for the man accused of murdering Nanaimo’s Makayla Chang is now scheduled.

Court records show Nov. 1 to Nov. 5 were established as dates for the hearing for Steven Bacon, charged with the first degree murder of Chang.

The dates were established Friday, Feb. 12 in provincial court in Nanaimo.

Following the anticipated hearing this fall, a judge will decide if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to Supreme Court trial.

Bacon pleaded not guilty last October to murdering Chang, whose body was found at an undisclosed location in May 2017 roughly two months after she vanished.

In September 2020 Bacon was charged with first degree murder in connection with the 16-year-old Chang’s death.

He remains in custody in Ontario for several alleged sex offences but is expected to be in Nanaimo for the preliminary inquiry.
