Island Health suffers worst weekend yet during COVID-19 pandemic

NANAIMO — Last weekend saw the highest amount of cases for Island Health in a weekend so far during the pandemic.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed on Monday, Jan. 11, 59 new cases were found during the three day weekend reporting period. This is the highest number of new cases confirmed over a weekend reporting period in the Island Health region.

The previous worst weekend was with 58 new cases detected at the end of November.

Island Health data shows there’s currently 186 active COVID-19 cases within the health authority, with 117 found in the central Island region. There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and public health figures, with Island Health showing 58 new over the weekend reporting period, not 59.

Dr. Henry confirmed 1,475 new cases across B.C. over the weekend.

The number of active cases in the province dropped by nearly 1,000.

Hospitalization rates remained the same, with slightly less people receiving intensive care.

Unfortunately a further 22 people passed away, taking B.C. to 1010 COVID-related fatalities since the pandemic began.

One of the fatalities was within Island Health, where 13 people have died.

More than 50,500 people have recovered from the virus in B.C.

As the province’s vaccine program rolls out, nearly 60,000 doses of vaccine have been administered by Sunday.

Snuneymuxw First Nation reported no new COVID-19 on Sunday. There’s currently 17 active cases with eight people recovering.
