Two teens hit by car along Nanaimo’s Departure Bay Road

NANAIMO — A driver was issued a ticket after striking two youths in a crosswalk along Departure Bay over the weekend.

Nanaimo RCMP say just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, a 40-year-old man was driving a newer model Ford Mustang along Departure Bay Rd. near Drip Coffee, when he struck a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old who were in a marked crosswalk.

Rsv. Cst. Gary O’Brien said RCMP, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services were all on scene.

“The two youths were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to hospital for further follow-up. The driver remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators.”

Speed and impairment have been ruled out as contributing factors, with the driver issued a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

O’Brien said it’s a great reminder for drivers to always keep their eyes on the road and make sure distracting items like cell phones stay out of their hands.

“We believe the driver probably just took his eyes off the road for a second looking at the ocean, then next thing you know, he’s driving into the crosswalk. Slow down, have your head on a swivel, be prepared to stop at all times.”
