Nanaimo woman’s credit cards rack up thousands in purchases after being stolen overnight from vehicle

NANAIMO — Local police are again reminding people not to leave valuable items in their vehicles, especially overnight.

The warning comes after a woman had her purse stolen from her vehicle overnight on Monday, Dec. 14 in a residential parking lot on Cavan St. in downtown Nanaimo.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said a rock was thrown through a side window of her car.

“Within hours, approximately $3000 in purchases were made at various local businesses and online using her credit cards that were in the stolen purse,” O’Brien said in a statement.”

Police identified two people of interest who were captured on surveillance video around the time of the theft.

The first is a woman, between 20 and 25 years old wearing a light jacket, black backpack and leggings. The second is a man, 25-30 years old in dark clothing.

RCMP don’t believe the pair have any connection to the apartment building parking lot where the theft occurred.

“At this time the two persons profiled are only considered persons of interest but investigators would certainly like to speak with them,” O’Brien said.

Anyone with information on the theft, or the identity of the pair pictured, is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
