The home is a total loss, Young said, and there were no injuries.

However, the fire spread to a neighbouring hayfield.

Young said their crews, backed up by Cranberry Fire Department crews, managed to contain the situation.

“It was concerning because there are some fir trees around the area, as well as a hayfield with some structures a few hundred meters away,” Young said. “We had to get on top of it, get a perimeter established, and make sure we didn’t get any more spread.”

Working in favour of Extension and Cranberry fire crews were light winds, Young noted.

He said it was extremely important to quickly and efficiently contain what could have been a much more serious fire given the elevated forest fire risk

“I think if it was later in the day and the winds were up, we might be having a different conversation.”

Young said the impacted homeowner didn’t require temporary lodging.

The fire’s cause is under investigation, with Young stating it’s too early to declare a potential cause.

A small section of White Rapids Rd. near Nanaimo River Rd. was shut down while crews worked the scene.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the forest fire threat in the mid-Island area is bordering between high and extreme.
