5 new COVID-19 cases in Island Health, another deadly day for B.C.

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases within Island Health continues to lag behind other health authorities as the province begins to plateau.

Five new cases were confirmed by the province on Wednesday, Dec. 16, out of the 640 new across B.C.

This ties for the lowest number of new cases since early November before cases skyrocketed to more than 20 per day in Island Health.

There’s been 799 total COVID-19 cases within Island Health since the beginning of the pandemic.

Currently, there’s 81 active cases throughout Island Health, with 36 found within the central Vancouver Island area.

Island Health remains the least affected health authority in B.C.

Nearly 10,000 cases are active in B.C. with another 10,500 people under active health monitoring.

The seven day average of new COVID-19 cases in B.C. hovers around 650, where it has remained for the last several days.

B.C. set a new record with 362 people hospitalized for COVID-19, of which 91 are receiving intensive care.

A further 24 people passed away since yesterday due to COVID-19.

The number of fatalities in B.C. rose by 94 since last Friday.
