B.C. sets new single-day record high for COVID-19 cases, just two in Island Health

NANAIMO — British Columbia suffered its most active day in the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 139 new cases were confirmed Thursday, Sept. 10 by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, setting a new high mark for case counts in a 24 hour period.

Only two were in the Island Health region bringing the total to 187 since the start of the pandemic.

The number of active cases crept back up to 1,412 after dipping slightly on Wednesday. There are eight active cases in the Island Health region.

Throughout B.C., 3,109 people remain under active public health monitoring while 42 people are currently in hospital, 14 in intensive or critical care.

Dr. Henry spoke on continuing to adjust and adapt to the new normal. She acknowledged life had changed substantially through the pandemic and adjustments would continue to be made in order to combat spread.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we have adapted and learned many things and we’ve created a new normal we are now living in. It doesn’t stop here though, we will continue to learn and adapt as we move forward,” Henry said.

The record high number of cases coincides, but is not influenced by, a return to school for students across B.C.

Dr. Henry said public health will maintain close watch on schools and deal with outbreaks if they occur.

“Like we have in every previous year, we’ll be there if a communicable disease arises that can spread to others. We’ve had measles, we’ve had meningitis and we’ll deal with COVID as well and the school community will know and be alerted.”

She added should the outbreak in a school be of risk to the public, notices would then extend beyond the school community.
