NANAIMO — A motorcyclist was taken to hospital following a serious overnight incident on the Old Island Hwy.

Shortly after 11 p.m., Nanaimo RCMP attended to a stretch of the highway between Turner Rd. and Enterprise Way.

Sgt. Jon Stuart told NanaimoNewsNOW two bikes were travelling northbound together when one rear-ended a vehicle.

“The vehicle and the motorcycle collided on the roadway and the motorcycle ended up flipping over,” Stuart said. “There was a second motorcycle headed north that was also involved in the collision.”

The driver of the motorcycle which hit the vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger of the motorcycle, along with two others on the other bike sustained minor injuries.

RCMP said their investigation continues.

“We’re looking into whether alcohol or speed were a factor…whether there were any contributing factors. The analyst was called in last night and attended the scene,” Stuart said.

The crash is the second time the Old Island Hwy. has been closed this week following an incident Wednesday night on the same stretch of road where a car hit a power pole.
