NANAIMO — An annual seed swap event has taken root in Nanaimo.

Roughly 1,000 people are expected at the Seedy Sunday event hosted by Nanaimo Foodshare on Sunday, March 1 at Nanaimo District Secondary School.

Coordinator Jennifer Short told NanaimoNewsNOW the decades-old event is more popular and important than ever.

“The idea of seed swapping is quite a small niche, but now that people are growing in their own yard and wanting to know where their food comes from, it’s getting to be a lot more popular of an event.”

The core purpose of Seedy Sunday is to diversify and expand gardens.

“If somebody grows something in their own yard, they’re welcome to bring their seeds. We have have a seed exchange table and they’re able to swap what they have in surplus for something else.”

All seeds being swapped are locally grown and re-grown and aren’t genetically modified.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The $3 entry fee goes directly to the Nanaimo Foodshare Society.
