Qualicum Beach man wins annual salmon derby in Port Alberni

imPORT ALBERNI — A man from Qualicum Beach is $15,000 richer after landing the biggest fish at the 48^th annual Port Alberni Salmon Derby.

Jim Boorman hauled in a 32.4 lbs Chinook with a pink hootchie during the derby’s opening day on Saturday Aug. 31 in the Alberni canal near China Creek.

After catching the fish, Boorman removed the possibility of winning the derby from his mind.

“Now it’s reality, it’s pretty special, it really is,” Boorman said.

He had the third rod in a boat with two friends who had all tried their luck at the popular Port Alberni event for the past three years.

Boorman said their boat only hauled in two fish all weekend and they’re happy one was a lucrative tyee.
