Nanaimo judo athletes bring home national medals

NANAIMO — The nine member team from the Nanaimo Judo Club has returned home from the Canadian Open Championships with a club record seven medals.

The top performances were from Cheyenne Fiandor and Korin Gardner, each earning multiple medals.

Fiandor won gold in the open division of newaza (similar to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and also won the newaza F63 category.

She added another bronze medal in the senior 57kg division.

Gardner took home gold in his U21 category and the bronze medal in his weight class in the U18 event.

Other medalists were Hannah Darmadi with a bronze in the 70kg U18 competition and Dakota Sanzana who earned a bronze medal in the her U16 44kg class.

The Nanaimo group was part of Team BC, which finished third in the overall medal count with 46.

Nanaimo’s athletes, coached by Eloy Fiandor, returned on Wednesday after competing at the Canadian Open May 16-19 in Edmonton.
