Nanaimo SPCA appeals to City Council for pet sale ban
NANAIMO — Buying a puppy while also picking up supplies and food at your local pet store may soon be a relic of the past in Nanaimo.
The local SPCA wrote to City Council asking for the retail sale of pets to be banned and updated regulations for stores, day cares, kennels and groomers.
Leon Davis, branch manager for the Nanaimo SPCA, told NanaimoNewsNOW he hopes the City will take their advice because it means healthier animals for everyone.
“When you see a puppy in the window they look very cute and healthy, but if the parents are coming from somewhere that’s not healthy, or if they’ve been bred repeatedly over the years, or inter-bred, you’re going to see potential for a lot of health issues and possible genetic issues.”
