Veteran Nanaimo Clippers goaltender excelling in new environment

NANAIMO — The Clippers have once again found an impressive veteran goalie.

Hugo Laring has given the team excellent netminding after taking over from Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau, who led Nanaimo to the BCHL finals last spring.

In his first month with the Clippers, Laring was given an honourable mention for the three stars of the week twice and was also selected for an honourable mention for the three stars of the month.

The Swedish-born goalie is enjoying his time in Nanaimo so far.

“The guys have been easy to adapt to and easy to get along with. It’s been great so far and we have a really good group here.”

In his last year of junior eligibility, Laring was looking for a new challenge, so he decided to jump to the BCHL and the Nanaimo Clippers.

“I’d been in the same league back home for three years, so I wanted to do something else. I had some contacts, so I reached out, and the Clippers were interested. I’ve found it’s a perfect match, and going to the Clippers was an easy choice.”

Laring is rare as a right-handed catching goalie.

He doesn’t have one goalie idol or list a special style for his play.

“I like to watch a lot of goalies. I don’t have a special style, but I like a lot of righties nowadays. There are starting to be a lot of righties in the NHL, so it’s fun to watch. I like Logan Thompson with the Capitals, he makes a lot of weird saves, and I like watching him.”

Laring enters the second week of October with a 4-2 record and a 2.01 goals against average.

He’s put up excellent numbers, but adjusting to the North American game hasn’t been easy.

“The last time I played on NHL-sized rinks was four years ago. It’s actually been a hard thing for me. It’s mostly the angles, I don’t have to move as much as I did back home. I’m trying not to move too much, but I’m getting more comfortable.”

The cultural adjustment to Nanaimo has been made easier because one of his best friends, Otto Magnusson, has also joined the club.

“Me and Otto have played together since we were five except for last year. We went to school for three years together, so I know Otto inside out. He’s a great guy, and I love him, and we have a lot of things in common. We have an awesome relationship.”

Laring’s hockey future is still being decided.

He wants to find a place to play for next season after his junior career is finished, and he’s open to many different options.

“It’s my last junior year. I have to make a choice for next season, and I’m open for anything. Playing over here in Division 1 would be awesome. I know I always can go back to Sweden and find something over there. I want to find a level that fits me, and I want to play games. For a goalie, it’s important to find a team where you can play a lot. I’m focusing on my game and performing at a high level.”
