Serauxmen Stadium celebrating 50 years in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A special celebration is being planned before the Nanaimo NightOwls game on Friday, July 31, to honour the 50th anniversary of Serauxmen Stadium.

The pre-game ceremony starts at 6 p.m. at the stadium, with the first pitch against the Port Angeles Lefties being thrown at 6:35 pm, with fans encouraged to arrive early to take in the honours.

In a release, the City said the ceremony will feature comments from people “connected to the stadium’s history and ongoing legacy,” with the stadium first opening its doors on July 31, 1976, after being converted from a former coal mine site.

The City bought Serauxmen from Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools in 2017, and has invested more than $5M into the facility and surrounding area since, including LED field lighting in 2020, renovations in 2022 featuring new netting, padding and the creation of a stadium plaza.

“For 50 years, Serauxmen Stadium has been a special place where our community comes together to celebrate sport, create memories and support local athletes,” said mayor Leonard Krog. “The stadium was built through the dedication of volunteers and community partners, and that spirit continues today.”

More recent improvements include the seasonal installation of a 20-foot by 10-foot video wall next to the existing scoreboard in left centre field, and the paving of the main parking lot last fall.

Future improvements planned for the next few years include new washrooms, expanded bleachers, a new bullpen, and accessibility improvements.
