‘It’s going to change a lot:’ new video wall coming for Nanaimo NightOwls season

NANAIMO — Fans cheering on the home side at Serauxmen Stadium this summer will get a new, high-definition look at the action.

The Nanaimo NightOwls have announced an agreement with an Island-based business which will see seasonal installation of a 20-foot by 10-foot video wall next to the existing scoreboard in left centre field.

NightOwls general manager Tina Baker-Cornett said the screen is currently installed at the Cowichan Community Centre and used during game nights by the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the BC Hockey League.

“We just think that this is just going to wrap the whole package for our fifth year. Adding kiss cams and replays and just opening up the door to a lot of new sponsorships or partners is an added layer. It’s going to change a lot of our game day entertainment.”

The exact date for installation of the screen at Serauxmen Stadium is yet to be determined, as Cowichan’s season must end before it can be removed and sent up Island.

Cowichan is in a playoff series against the Nanaimo Clippers, down 2-0 with game three in Nanaimo on Tuesday, April 21.

Baker-Cornett is optimistic the screen can be in place for an exhibition game against the VIU Mariners on May 27, leading into the team’s home opener nearly a week later.

Entering a milestone fifth year, the team is continuing to add to and refine their game nights with purpose.

“We’ve added a few other things, and we just want to make it’s a family outing in the summer. Some of the best nights are watching the ball game here while the sun sets. We just want more people to come out, know about us, and enjoy a summer night at Serauxmen.”

The screen won’t be the only major change at the ballpark for fans this summer.

Paving of the main parking lot wrapped last fall and opened to the public in early November, with improvements to pedestrian safety and traffic movement.
