NANAIMO — Up to 150 new student seats will soon be available at Wellington Secondary School through the completion of a campus addition.

A detached, pre-fabricated classroom building was officially unveiled on Monday, June 8, resulting in the addition of six new classrooms, along with accessible washrooms, flex spaces, and an elevator between the two floors.

Leanne Lee, chair of the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools Board, said the new spaces are a commitment from all levels of government to safe and secure learning spaces for the next generation.

“Facilities matter, when students have safe, modern, and welcoming spaces, it impacts how they learn and how they feel. These classrooms will support innovative teaching, collaboration, and connection, helping students prepare not just academically, but as engaged, thoughtful citizens.”

Classrooms will be used by students beginning next school year.

The $9 million project was announced in August 2024 and was originally slated to open earlier this year.

Provincial minister of infrastructure Bowinn Ma said Monday the project is part of over $100 million in spending throughout Nanaimo-Ladysmith over the last decade, including additions to both Dover Bay Secondary and Ecole Hammond Bay Elementary in 2023.

Seismic upgrades to Nanaimo’s Cilaire and Pleasant Valley schools were also included, as well pending investments for an expanded and new school in Ladysmith.

“It’s about more than just providing buildings, we’re talking about ensuring students can learn in spaces that inspire them, support them, and help them thrive close to home,” Ma said.

A new modular addition at Chase River Elementary is slightly behind schedule as well, however it was confirmed Monday the project would be complete by late July and is set to also welcome students in September.
