NANAIMO — One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash along Hwy. 1.

Ladysmith RCMP, along with Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department and paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services, were called to Hwy. 1, south of Timberlands Rd., just before 4:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, after a collision between a motorbike and a semi tractor-trailer.

Staff Sgt. Trevor Busch told NanaimoNewsNOW their officers arrived on scene a short time later, with the motorcyclist, a 40-year-old man, pronounced dead when they arrived.

“The investigation involved the assistance of the Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Team from the RCMP. Traffic was temporarily in the southbound direction, and the vehicles were temporarily diverted onto Timberlands Rd. and through an alternate route, although some of the traffic also chose to divert through Cedar.”

Investigators had southbound traffic closed for around two and a half hours, according to Busch, reopening shortly after 7 a.m.

Busch said he was unable to speak about how the two vehicles came into contact with each other or any contributing factors to the crash.

“I can’t share any information about the rider at this time. The investigation is still presently underway, and out of privacy for the family, of course, we want to make sure that we respect the privacy of everyone involved.”
