Federal grant money to help make Lantzville’s Huddlestone Park more accessible

LANTZVILLE — Accessible upgrades are coming to a mid-Island park, a primary outdoor gathering and play place in the community.

Over $80,000 in federal grant money was awarded to the District of Lantzville to help eliminate physical barriers and create an inclusive environment at Huddlestone Park, located along Lantzville Rd.

Planned improvements include installing an assisted seat bay adjacent to the existing zipline, a variety of multi-use and single-use spinners, rubber surfacing and improved wood fibres on the ground, and planned accessibility upgrades to the connecting pathways.

Adding additional accessible washroom features is also planned, with approval waiting on at least one other government grant for additional funding.

Mayor Mark Swain said this is an important step towards ensuring all community members have equal access to recreation and public spaces.

“We are deeply grateful for the support of the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund, which allows us to move forward with this much-needed project.”

The total price for the project is around $112,000, with Council still needing to approve a budget amendment for the full price at a future council meeting.

They hope to have the new equipment installed sometime in the spring.

The grant, a total of $80,426, was provided through the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund, which supports small-scale construction projects which increase accessibility in community spaces or workplaces, according to a release from the District.
