Don Kimura wins Salmon Derby

It was a Port Alberni sweep at this year’s Labour Day Salmon Derby as the leader board was filled by locals.

Don Kimura landed top spot with a 30lb 14oz Chinook he hooked off Nanat Island in Barclay Sound.

The veteran angler said he knew he had the winner, which he caught on a spoon Monday morning.

“It was a big fish. I knew it was a big fish,” he said. “I knew that we had to run this one in. I didn’t know exactly how big it was, but I knew it was a winner.”

Keith Seidel was Sunday’s winner with a 25 pounder and Ian Simmons had Saturday’s top fish.
