NANAIMO — It wasn’t by much, but the mid-Island just experienced its hottest Aug. 26 on record.

Preliminary data from Environment Canada showed monitoring stations at both the Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach airports set new single-day temperature records on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Nanaimo reached 31.2 degrees Celsius, edging out a 2016 record of 31 degrees, while Qualicum Beach saw a high of 28.8 degrees, again beating a 2016 mark by 0.2 degrees.

Gibsons, Sechelt and Port Alberni were some of the other neighbouring communities to also set new temperature records on Tuesday.

A majority of new records were from communities in the Interior, led by Lytton which soared to 41.3 degrees and was the hottest spot in Canada.

Lillooet got to 40.4 degrees, breaking a 1933 record, while Cache Creek topped out at 39.7 degrees.

Forecasts for the central Island indicate a cooling trend by the long weekend, with temperatures expected to remain in the mid-to-high 20s through until Saturday, Aug. 30.

A special weather statement remains in effect for most of Vancouver Island, including areas of Nanaimo, Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
