Vacant Nanaimo care facility to be converted into supportive housing

NANAIMO — Over 70 more supportive housing units are coming to central Nanaimo inside a vacant former care facility.

The province, through BC Housing, announced Nanaimo Travellers Lodge at 1298 Nelson St. will be renovated into 78 supportive housing units with on-site services provided.

In a news release, Housing minister Ravi Kahlon said this is part of their initiative to help people who are struggling to find a place to live get back on their feet.

“These units will not only provide a roof overhead for residents, but also a number of other support services…This is another example of the rapid response of our government and the City of Nanaimo to help people who are experiencing homelessness.”

Rent will be $500 per month which includes two meals a day, laundry services, and access to life-skills training, employment assistance, counselling, and other mental and physical health resources.

The new units would be provided to those currently living in shelters, over the age of 19, and for those who want to minimize their exposure to drugs and alcohol.

A local non-profit will be selected to operate the site and provide around-the-clock staffing.

“Providing safe and secure housing for our community members who need it most continues to be one of city council’s top priorities,” said Leonard Krog, mayor of Nanaimo. “These new supportive homes at Travellers Lodge will offer stability and a sense of belonging, helping residents to thrive.”

This is the fourth project to be announced since the Province and the City signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year, promising 100 new beds for unhoused people in Nanaimo through BC Housing’s HEART and HEARTH programs.

Other projects include a new supportive and affordable housing complex to replace the Newcastle Place temporary housing complex, a temporary housing project in Chase River, and a planned 60-bed modular complex at 1030 Old Victoria Rd.

BC Housing is leasing the Nanaimo Travellers Lodge for three years and will provide annual operating funding, along with around $394,000 provided by the City.

Full funding details and the non-profit operator will be announced at a later date.

Nanaimo Travellers Lodge shut down in 2017 and has been the source of social disorder incidents in the past, including minor fires.
