NANAIMO — Property taxes are due for mid Island area land owners before varying penalties kick in.

All municipalities on the mid Island from Ladysmith to Qualicum Beach have a Tuesday, July 2 property tax payment deadline.

Regional District of Nanaimo land owners also have a Tuesday payment deadline, with those funds going directly to the B.C. government.

There have been notable rises in tax bills in many regional communities this year, with the City of Nanaimo applying a 7.7 per cent hike, which includes a 1.1 per cent built in for asset management.

The City of Nanaimo stated that historically 90 per cent of all property taxes are paid by the due date, aligning with this year’s rate of compliance.

Nearly $155 million will be collected this year by the City of Nanaimo from property taxpayers within Nanaimo city limits, according to the City.

If property taxes aren’t paid in three consecutive years, then the property will be sold at the City’s annual tax sale in late September.
