NANAIMO — A popular community-wide garage sale is back in Nanaimo this weekend, bringing together bargain hunters and thrifty shoppers into one location.

The fourth edition of the Nanaimo Recycles Trunk Sale is happening this Saturday, June 22 inside the Country Club Centre parking lot from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., with up to 150 vendor spaces available.

Nanaimo mayor Leonard Krog said this popular event is like a multi-house garage sale the whole community can take part in.

“It’s a great fun community gathering and it’s a wonderful opportunity for folks to dispose of things they don’t need, and hopefully someone’s trash may become somebody else’s treasure…you never know what people need.”

The event is free to attend, with vendors having to register in advance if they want to sell their used goods.

Krog said events like these promote the reuse and recycling of unwanted items, while the only retail-type of booths permitted need to sell items made from recycled materials.

“If you can fill a household need and save something from going into the trash bin, or into our landfill, it’s good news for the environment and it’s good news for the planet.”

Along with picking up some gently used items, Krog said it’s also a great way to connect with your community.

“Exchange a little news and information and learn a little bit about your neighbours… and perhaps enable all of us to make better use of those things that we no longer need or want.”

Another trunk Show will be held on August 24, inside the L parking lot at Vancouver Island University, with registration now open for sellers to apply for a booth.

Interested sellers can reserve a space by sending an email to public.worksinfo@nanaimo.ca with the subject line of 2024 Trunk Sale Registration.

The deadline for applications is 3:00 p.m. the Friday before the sale (August 23).
