NANAIMO — It’s been a busy spring of hosting events for the Nanaimo Track and Field Club.

The final weekend of May was the club’s signature meet, the Elwood Wylie, while the club also welcome some of the province’s best athletes at the BC High School provincial championships Thursday, June 6 to Saturday, June 8.

Spokesperson Wanda Urbanowicz said the weekend went very well.

“The meet was a huge success. The weather was close to ideal so conditions were ripe for personal bests and amazing performances in all events.”

Urbanowicz said several local athletes shined at provincials with eight medal wins and 13 top eight finishes.

“For NTFC, the three days were brilliantly capped off with three gold medal performances from Rhys Beaudoin (800 metres), Carter Cunning (800 metres) and the senior girls 4×400 metres relay with Lydia Paris, Ava Gauthier, Haley Martin and Brea Gillette who ran 3:59.78.”

Silver medal winners were Lydia Paris in high jump, Lucy Russell for pole vault, Gavin Esleyer for the junior boys 400 metres and Rhys Beaudoin in the junior boys 1500 metres steeplechase.

A bronze medal went to Katelyn Putz for the senior girls hammer throw.

Another major event the Nanaimo Track and Field club will host is just over a month away.

“It has been extremely busy and we could not do it without our amazing team of NTFC member volunteers and BC Athletics officials,” Urbanowicz said. “Next up is the BC Athletics U16 Senior Track and Field Championships July 12-14 at the Rotary Bowl.”

For anyone interested in being involved there are many volunteer opportunities from helping at event areas, hospitality or set up.

A volunteer sign up is on the NTFC website.
