FortisBC natural gas rates remaining unchanged April 1

NANAIMO — Those using natural gas for home heating, cooking or other uses will see their bills remain relatively unchanged for at least the next three months.

FortisBC announced Monday, March 18, they’ve been given the green light from the B.C. Utilities Commission to maintain their rate for all customers at $2.23 per gigajoule.

Prices are reviewed every three months and could have potentially gone up or down on April 1. The next review will come ahead of a June 1 potential price adjustment.

Despite no change coming from FortisBC, the provincial government are set to increase their carbon tax on natural gas and propane on April 1.

FortisBC said it’s a rate they don’t control and see no revenue from.

“FortisBC acquires natural gas at market-based prices and factors like supply and demand, weather and economic conditions affect the price of natural gas in North America,” a statement from the company read. “We do not mark up the cost of gas, so our customers pay what we pay.”

A review before Jan. 1, 2024 saw prices for both natural gas and renewable natural gas decrease.

FortisBC services just under 1.1 million customers province wide.
