QUALICUM BEACH — An 80-year-old Alberta man has succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a vehicle while helping another driver and potentially saving her life.

In the early morning hours of March 2, a car driven by a woman lost control and crashed into a pole along Hwy. 19A near Laburnum Rd. in Qualicum Beach. A short time later, the man came upon the scene and stopped to help.

The pair, waiting for additional help, were then hit by an on-coming vehicle driven by a potentially impaired driver, with the man making another selfless act as the vehicle approached at speed.

“The man reportedly saw the second vehicle coming and pushed the female driver out of the way which likely saved her life,” a release from BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) noted. “The female suffered serious injuries, but is expected to recover.”

All three people involved in the incidents were taken to hospital, with the man suffering serious, life- threatening injuries.

RCMP say the man passed away in a Victoria hospital, surrounded by his family.

“Oceanside RCMP originally attended to the scene and determined that signs of impairment were present with the driver of the second vehicle who was also transported to hospital. BC Highway Patrol has now assumed lead in the investigation.”

BCHP are looking for witnesses or dash cam footage linked to the collision, or the vehicles involved.

Officers are asking anyone in the area of Hwy. 19A and Labernum Rd. prior to the incident shortly before 3 a.m. on March 2, is asked to contact BCHP Parksville at 250 954 2953, quoting file number 2024-388.

Investigators have not released any information regarding the condition of the allegedly impaired driver, nor what charges may be recommended.
