NANAIMO — A house being built in Nanaimo’s rural East Wellington area burned to its foundations after a fire tore through the partially completed structure.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) crews responded to 2550 Stobart Rd., south of Mountain View Elementary School, on Sunday, June 14, just after 2:30 p.m., with the stick-frame and roof structure already fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

NFR assistant chief of operations Troy Libbus told NanaimoNewsNOW no one was at the site when they arrived, with the owner arriving later to confirm the property was vacant when the fire broke out.

“Right away, we went into a defensive mode due to the intensity of the heat and the flames and the building being involved, and we protected exposures. Exposures are basically, there was a sea can with some construction tools in it, so we protected that, and we protected any embers cast that would go into the trees.”

Multiple people phoned 911 after seeing smoke high above Nanaimo.

Libbus said the fire likely spread fast in the open structure, with NFR, the RCMP, and a private insurance company investigation to determine the cause.

Libbus said with record-breaking temperatures already arriving on the mid-Island, it’s important to make sure your home is in defensive mode when it comes to fires.

“Go to the website for BC FireSmart and protect your houses to make sure that, if there is a fire in your area or if there is any ember cast or radiant heat, you’ve done the best to protect your home.”

The structure on Stobart Rd. was a total loss, with NFR and neighbours making sure any embers from the blaze didn't spread to neighbouring structures.
